I was reading the book of 1 Samuel during devotion with my husband and something pretty captivating stood out to me.
“15 …I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now. 17 Then Eli answered and said, ‘Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him’. 18 And she said ‘Let your maidservant find favor in your sight.’ So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.” – 1 Samuel 1:15-18
I took two really valuable lessons out of this passage of scripture:
- You have to pour in order to get peace – Hannah had been in mourning for years because she could not bear children. Even though she had the love of her husband, it wasn’t enough. However, she hadn’t spoken about it to anyone. In 1 Sam 8:1 we see that her husband knew that she was sad, but she never responded to him. I believe that holding everything inside of her, all the frustration, anger, and sadness, made it extremely difficult, and maybe even impossible for her to experience peace. However, I believe that pouring out to the wrong person wouldn’t have helped either. It was only after she poured out her soul to God that she was able to experience peace that freed her from her emotions and allowed her to eat again and smile.
- Peace can happen while you’re STILL IN THE STORM – When Hannah left, nothing had physically changed about her situation. She was still barren and had still not conceived the son that she prayed for. However, she had FAITH in her prayers. She received her FREEDOM and therefore her peace, while her situation remained the same.
All in all, this scripture reminded me that God cares and wants to help us but in order to receive the peace that we need to whether the storm, we have to POUR EVERYTHING out to Him.
As always, I really hope that this post is helpful to you and that it helps you go through any storm that you’re in and anyone that you’ll face in the future. God WILL answer your prayers!
Love you all dearly!
